Different types of VPNs
There are two basic types of VPN. remote access VPNs allow users to connect to another network, either the internet or their company's internal systems, through a private encrypted tunnel.
Remote access VPNs allow you to connect to your company's internal servers or to the public internet.
Another type, site-to-site VPN, also known as a router-to-router VPN, is used primarily in corporate environments, especially when the corporate headquarters is located in several different locations. Site-to-site VPNs create a closed internal network in which locations can connect to each other. This is known as an intranet.
Site-to-site VPNs are used to create Intranets.
There are several VPN protocols or security methods. The oldest is PPTP, the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, which is still in use today but is widely regarded as one of the least secure protocols. The others are IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec, SSL, TLS, SSH and OpenVPN. as an open source protocol, OpenVPN is one of the most secure protocols as any vulnerabilities in its programming are quickly discovered and patched.
